The DC Universe, with its iconic heroes, has an equally captivating roster of villains. These villains are the spice that adds depth and complexity to the stories we love. While the classic villains like Joker, Reverse-Flash, and Lex Luthor are iconic, the past decade has seen the emergence of some truly remarkable new foes.
The challenge of creating a compelling villain is immense, but the DC Rebirth initiative has gifted us with a handful of memorable antagonists. Among them are Godspeed, an antagonistic speedster who pushed Barry Allen to his limits, and Olgrun, an Old God lurking just beyond reality, ready to unleash chaos.
10. The Sinister Sons: A Legacy of Evil
The Sinister Sons, a duo with a unique twist, debuted a few years ago, spinning off from Green Lantern and Kneel Before Zod. One half, Sinson, is a Sinestro wannabe, while the other is the legacy of General Zod. Though their accomplishments are few, the idea of young villains seeking their place in the universe is intriguing.
9. Crytoon: The Anti-Joker
Crytoon, a villain from Batman: Gargoyle of Gotham, is a unique creation. Once a child patient at Arkham Asylum, he was manipulated by the Stadtgeist cabal to become their agent. Crytoon is the opposite of Joker, a cartoon-obsessed killer who weeps instead of laughs. He brings cartoon violence to life, dropping anvils on people's heads with gruesome results.
8. Punchline: Harley Quinn's Successor
When Harley Quinn moved on from the Joker, the Clown Prince of Crime found a new partner, Alexis Kaye, aka Punchline. Like Harley, Alexis was obsessed with Joker, but her expertise lay in poisons, and she created her own unique Joker Venom. Kaye eventually left the Joker's side and took charge of the Royal Flush Gang, showing her independence.
7. Godspeed: The Speedster Foil
Godspeed, or August Heart, was a detective and friend of Barry Allen. After gaining powers during a Speed Force storm, he became a speedster like Barry. Unlike the Flash, Godspeed preferred extrajudicial killings, making him a compelling foil to the Scarlet Speedster. It's a shame he doesn't appear more often in the comics.
6. Zanni: The Fifth-Dimensional Threat
Zanni, a Fifth-Dimensional entity, is one of the most intriguing villains of the DC All In era. His powers are fueled by imagination and performance, and he reached his peak during the circus age. Dick Grayson, a superhero born in the circus, became the means for Zanni to regain his powers. Zanni has observed Nightwing his entire life and is willing to do whatever it takes to have the hero serve as his agent.
5. The Devil Nezha: Master of Magic
The Devil Nezha made his debut in Batman/Superman: World's Finest, and what a debut it was! Nezha is a powerful demon who took control of all magic in the DC Universe. He could control every hero and villain associated with magic, including Green Lantern. Though locked away, Nezha returned in modern times, becoming the central antagonist in Batman vs. Robin and Lazarus Planet.
4. Olgrun: The Old God's Legacy
Olgrun, one of the Old Gods, has largely stayed in the shadows, but his threat is very real. Driven mad after killing his daughter, Olgrun's destructive rampage was stopped by other Old Gods, who separated him into seven God-Aspects. His poisoned spirit lingers just outside the DCU, and he created the Radiant Dead, a terrifying legion capable of assimilating anything.
3. Upside-Down Man: Leader of the Otherkind
Upside-Down Man is a member of the Otherkind, a race of monsters born from the dark side of magic. He is their leader and one of the strongest magical monsters from the Dark Multiverse. With insane strength, agility, and virtually limitless magic, he can change matter and rearrange reality. He's the last creature you want to encounter in the dark.
2. Failsafe: Batman's Contingency Gone Wrong
Batman's contingencies are usually a good thing, but the Batman of Zur-En-Arrh took it too far with Failsafe. Failsafe is an android designed to eliminate Batman if he ever took a life. After the Joker faked his death, Failsafe was activated and hunted Batman relentlessly, even to the moon. With its advanced gadgets and always staying ten steps ahead, Failsafe presented one of the toughest challenges Batman has ever faced.
1. Absolute Joker: A Terrifying Counterpart
The Absolute Joker, a counterpart from the Absolute Universe, is so different that he might as well be a new character. Supposedly, he is Jack Grimm, alive since the late 1800s, posing as his descendants and building an empire with JK Holdings. But beneath the man is a monster, a devilish clown-like ghoul who stalks, kills, and consumes people on his private islands.
