Embarking on a 3000-mile journey in a plug-in hybrid Volvo XC90 is an adventure in itself, but it's the perfect test for a car that embodies the essence of effortless cruising.
The Quest for the Ultimate Wafter
Sometimes, you need a car that's more than just a means of transportation; you need a wafter - a vehicle that glides smoothly, offering an unparalleled driving experience. And that's exactly what I set out to find.
While design elegance is a plus, it's the car's ability to provide a serene and isolated journey that truly defines its worth. Among the test cars at Autocar HQ, I had several options, including electric models like the Polestar 3. However, given the extensive mileage ahead, the daily charging routine was a less appealing prospect.
The Chosen Wafter: Volvo XC90
I opted for the gleaming Volvo XC90, a decision I would soon come to appreciate. Over the next 13 days, this SUV accompanied me on a journey that added 3000 miles to its odometer and left my fingerprints all over its massive touchscreen. Covering an average of 230 miles daily for nearly two weeks is a rigorous test for any vehicle, and the Volvo XC90 certainly had its fair share of strengths and weaknesses to uncover.
A Journey from Anglesey to Amalfi
The itinerary was diverse and demanding. First, we headed to Anglesey Circuit, where the XC90 played a supporting role in the Maserati MCXtrema test. The smooth ride and spacious boot of the XC90 ensured that photographer Jack Harrison could capture crisp tracking shots, leaving everyone impressed.
Then, it was time for a busman's autumn getaway to Italy. En route to the Volvo ES90 launch in Monaco, I made a brief stop, only to be greeted by a curious sight - an old Volvo 240 Estate from the late 1980s perched atop a mountain. It was a nostalgic moment, as I had grown up in the back of one of those sturdy wagons.
The XC90's Timeless Appeal
One of the XC90's most striking features is its timeless design. Despite being an older model, it still turns heads and exudes an air of sophistication. The raw power of its T8 plug-in hybrid powertrain was evident when I navigated the twists and turns of a Piedmontese hillside, effortlessly leaving a Panda in my wake.
The cockpit's sense of light and space added to the immersive experience, making the Great St Bernard Pass feel like a cinematic adventure. It was a testament to Volvo's design prowess, seamlessly blending modern luxury with a nod to its classic roots.
A Smooth Ride, but Room for Improvement
The XC90's easy drivability is a joy, mirroring its elegant looks. However, I must admit that I had higher expectations when it came to refinement. As soon as I saw the spec sheet, I knew that the T8 model might struggle with ride quality. And indeed, it did.
Potholes and expansion joints proved to be a challenge, and the 21-inch wheels didn't help matters. Many owners opt for even larger wheels, but I'd recommend considering the Plus trim, which offers a more comfortable 20-inch wheel option.
Fuel Economy: A Trade-Off
For a 2.3-tonne SUV, long-range fuel economy is understandably not its forte. Volvo's innovative engine approach, utilizing a four-cylinder core with turbos, superchargers, and electrification, has been a commercial success. However, with just two litres of displacement, the XC90 struggles to maintain impressive fuel efficiency, especially when the battery is depleted.
The XC90's Charm and Limitations
Despite its limitations, the XC90 exudes a sense of well-being and comfort. The Cardamom interior is a delight, and its ability to make long distances feel shorter is undeniable. However, when compared to the Volvo ES90, with its even more luxurious seating and sublime ride, the XC90 felt a bit outdated.
And Here's Where It Gets Controversial...
The ES90, with its cutting-edge technology and refined driving experience, is a true wafter. It leaves little room for debate. But does that mean the XC90 is ready for retirement? I'll leave that question open for discussion. After all, sometimes, it's the journey that matters more than the destination.
