Auroville, a city designed for sustainable living, is facing a significant challenge: a proposed IIT Madras campus that threatens its core principles. The heart of the issue lies in the planned location for the campus, which, according to some residents, jeopardizes their most productive organic farm.
The Auroville community is deeply concerned about the potential loss of Annapurna Farm, a 100-acre site currently serving as the community's central granary. They argue that the campus plan violates Auroville's founding principles, particularly its commitment to food sustainability. The residents' resistance, initiated in August, highlights the farm's crucial role in their food system, contributing approximately 30% of Auroville's food supply and processing most grains from other farms.
Annapurna Farm, a 135-acre model of regenerative agriculture, has been organically certified since 2005. Its productivity relies on a complex ecological system, including paddy fields, grazing land, and forest buffers. Residents also claim they were excluded from the decision-making process.
In response to these concerns, the Standing Committee on Education, Women, Children, Youth, and Sports, chaired by MP Digvijaya Singh, presented a report to Parliament. The committee acknowledged the Auroville Foundation's Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with IIT Madras for the sustainability campus. However, it also noted the potential impact of the proposed land on Annapurna Farm.
The parliamentary panel emphasized that food sustainability is integral to Auroville's vision, and the loss of farmland would affect its long-term viability. The panel recommended that Annapurna Farms should be preserved and that alternative sites nearby should be considered for the sustainability campus. A member of the Auroville Media Liaison welcomed the committee's recommendation, expressing hope for its implementation.
But here's where it gets controversial... Auroville officials have refuted the residents' claims. They assert that Annapurna's effective cultivation area is only about 30 acres, and Auroville's total farm output meets less than 12% of its current food needs. They propose strengthening food security by consolidating cultivation within the Green Belt and upgrading existing farms. They also deny excluding the community from the decision-making process, promising to share safeguards when ready.
The parliamentary panel also recommended that all land transfers related to the Master Plan should be implemented with full transparency and consultation with all stakeholders, including the Resident's Assembly and the International Advisory Council.
