Imagine a world where extinct species could be brought back to life, and endangered animals are preserved for future generations. Sounds like science fiction, right? But it’s happening right now. Colossal Biosciences, the biotech company making headlines for its ambitious de-extinction projects—think mammoths, dodos, and Tasmanian tigers—has just announced a game-changing initiative: a massive biovault in the United Arab Emirates (UAE) dedicated to safeguarding endangered species. And this is the part most people miss: it’s not just about storing DNA; it’s about creating a backup plan for life on Earth.
Located inside Dubai’s futuristic Museum of the Future, the Colossal Biovault and World Preservation Lab will house millions of frozen tissue samples from 10,000 species, including the 100 most endangered globally and in the UAE. But here’s where it gets controversial: last year, Colossal claimed to have ‘resurrected’ the dire wolf, a species extinct for thousands of years. Using ancient DNA, cloning, and gene-editing technology, they created three wolves—two males and a female—by altering the genes of a gray wolf. While experts agree these wolves are hybrids, not exact replicas, the achievement raises a bold question: Is de-extinction the future of conservation, or a risky distraction from protecting species in the wild?
In an exclusive interview with CNN’s Richard Quest, Colossal’s co-founder and CEO, Ben Lamm, drew parallels between the biovault and the Svalbard Global Seed Vault, the Arctic ‘doomsday’ facility preserving millions of plant seeds. ‘We’re eradicating species faster than conservation efforts can keep up,’ Lamm warned. ‘We need to start backing up all life on Earth.’ With over 48,000 species on the IUCN Red List threatened with extinction, the urgency couldn’t be clearer. But is freezing DNA enough? What happens if we rely too heavily on technology to fix problems caused by human activity?
Colossal’s approach is twofold: use the samples for research to protect endangered species today, and as a last resort to bring them back if they vanish. Lamm emphasizes the importance of preserving genetic diversity, a critical factor for species survival. He also highlights the ripple effects of losing keystone species, which can disrupt entire ecosystems. ‘Even if you don’t care about animals,’ he adds, ‘you should care because they help humans. Think about birds’ immune systems—studying them could benefit us.’
While Colossal’s biovault is groundbreaking, it’s not the only project of its kind. San Diego Zoo’s ‘Frozen Zoo’ has been storing genetic material since 1975, successfully cloning endangered species like Przewalski’s horse and the black-footed ferret. The Frozen Ark, a UK-based charity, has amassed 48,000 samples, including species extinct in the wild. San Diego Zoo Wildlife Alliance calls cryptopreservation ‘an unprecedented opportunity’ but cautions that success requires global coordination, regulatory frameworks, and long-term governance. Is the world ready for such a massive, collaborative effort?
Not everyone is convinced. Dusko Ilic, a stem cell science professor at King’s College London, notes that cryobanking alone isn’t conservation. ‘Frozen zoos are compelling,’ he says, ‘but they’re complementary tools, not substitutes for protecting habitats and managing populations.’ Colossal’s biovault, part of a nine-figure UAE initiative, aims to engage the public by displaying its work in the Museum of the Future. ‘We want to inspire the next generation of scientists,’ Lamm explains. But with the list of 100 species to be preserved still in progress, questions remain about transparency, funding, and integration with existing conservation efforts.
