Ford's Hypercar Lineup: A Bold Move with Logan Sargeant at the Helm
Ford is making waves in the racing world! The automotive giant has just announced that Logan Sargeant, a former Formula 1 driver, will be one of the first to pilot their new Hypercar in the World Endurance Championship (WEC) in 2027. Sargeant will join the experienced duo of Mike Rockenfeller and Sebastian Priaulx, both seasoned factory drivers. Their partnership with Sargeant, who has a relatively shorter sportscar racing history, is a bold statement.
Sargeant's appointment comes after a surprise test drive at WEC's Bahrain rookie event, where he impressed in the Ford Mustang GT3. Dan Sayers, Ford LMDh chief, praised the 25-year-old's technical prowess and high-downforce expertise, vital for the Hypercar program. But there's more to this story.
Ford's decision to include an American driver is a nod to legends like Dan Gurney and A.J. Foyt, who triumphed at Le Mans in 1967 with the iconic Ford GT40. But Sargeant's F1 stint with Williams was short-lived due to a lack of results, with only one points finish at the 2023 US Grand Prix. And this is the part most people miss—his withdrawal from the 2025 European Le Mans Series just before the season started.
Despite this, Ford has shown faith in Sargeant's abilities, and he's already set to race at the Daytona 24 Hours this month. Meanwhile, Rockenfeller and Priaulx will prepare for the Hypercar program by competing in the 2026 ELMS season, though Ford remains tight-lipped about the team's operational details.
Ford also unveiled the engine details for their LMDh prototype, a naturally-aspirated 5.4-litre V8, already proven in the Mustang GT3. The engine, developed in-house with Red Bull Ford Powertrains, will be paired with a spec hybrid system. Sayers promises a distinctive sound, a nod to Ford's racing heritage.
