Jack Draper Out of Australian Open: Injury Update and Recovery Plan (2026)

Jack Draper will not participate in the upcoming Australian Open, having determined that he has not fully recovered from his injury. The British number one has only competed in a single match since Wimbledon, as he has been dealing with bone bruising in his left arm which significantly impacted his 2025 season. As a result, he will remain inactive for a bit longer.

Ranked 10th globally, Draper shared this news in a video posted on X on Boxing Day, expressing the difficulty of his decision: "Sadly, my team and I have chosen not to travel to Australia this year. This was an incredibly tough choice, especially considering that the Australian Open is a grand slam and one of the most prestigious events in tennis.

"Nevertheless, I’ve been struggling with this injury for an extended period. I am now at the final stages of recovery, and jumping back into best-of-five-set matches so soon doesn’t feel like a wise choice for me or my game right now."

Draper’s arm injury had been a major issue throughout much of his season, culminating in a withdrawal from his second-round match at the US Open in August. Shortly thereafter, he decided to end his season. The 24-year-old had intended to make his return at the Ultimate Tennis Showdown grand final in London earlier in December, but opted to heed medical advice and take additional time for his rehabilitation.

By opting out of the first grand slam of the year, set to begin on January 18 in Melbourne, Draper is now eyeing a potential comeback in February. He hopes to be ready in time to defend his title at Indian Wells in early March.

As he reflected on his journey, he stated, "I’ve certainly encountered several setbacks, but this one has proven to be the most difficult and complex challenge I’ve faced. Interestingly, these experiences seem to enhance my resilience and fuel my desire to evolve into the player I aspire to be. I’m eagerly anticipating my return to competition in 2026."

But here's where it gets controversial: Should athletes prioritize their health over competing, even at significant tournaments? It's a debate that often divides fans and experts alike. What do you think? Do you agree with Draper’s decision to focus on recovery, or should he have pushed through to compete? Share your thoughts in the comments!
