For seven years, Helen Wilding has been sketching the same street in Melbourne's Brunswick, capturing the essence of a vibrant community and its ever-changing landscape. Once a week, she and her friends set up camp on the side of the road, pens in hand, focusing on the bustling plant nursery across from them. But this isn't just any street; it's a stretch of two kilometers through Fitzroy, one of Melbourne's oldest suburbs, brimming with cafes, pubs, homes, churches, markets, shops, and even a branch of the legendary A1 Lebanese bakery. Wilding's project has become a locus for a small community of sketchers, attracting tourists who snap photos for social media and locals who stop by to chat. Despite being an introvert, Wilding's passion for sketching has brought people together, fostering connections and a shared appreciation for the neighborhood. Her detailed and vibrant line drawings, which take four to six hours to complete and can stretch over multiple weeks, are a testament to her dedication and love for the area. But it's not just about the art; it's about the stories and memories captured in each sketch, like the names given to the pigeons on the roof of the building she was sketching, which made it into the final piece. Wilding's work is a record of how the street has changed over time, from closed shops during the COVID-19 lockdowns to the demolition of a nearby plant nursery, now replaced by an apartment building. Despite the changes, Wilding and her friends will be back next week, continuing their long-term project that could take another ten years to complete.
