The NHS has issued a warning about Lansoprazole, a widely-used medication, due to its potential to cause a life-altering side effect. This medication, similar to its counterpart Omeprazole, is a Proton Pump Inhibitor (PPI) used to treat acid reflux and stomach ulcers by reducing stomach acid production. While Lansoprazole is commonly prescribed to settle the stomach when someone is taking multiple medications, it can have serious side effects.
One of the rare conditions linked to Lansoprazole is subacute cutaneous lupus erythematosus (SCLE), an autoimmune condition where the immune system attacks the skin, causing inflammation and painful, itchy rashes. SCLE can be triggered by prolonged use of Lansoprazole and is characterized by joint pain and a red skin rash, especially on sun-exposed areas like the arms, cheeks, and nose.
While people can live with SCLE, it can be life-altering as sun exposure can cause painful flare-ups, and there is currently no cure. The NHS advises that SCLE may resolve once the medication is stopped, but this can take up to six months. Treatment typically involves strong corticosteroid creams or ointments, and in severe cases, oral medication may be prescribed.
To manage SCLE, it is crucial to avoid sunlight, especially during peak hours, and to use strong sunscreen and vitamin D supplements. However, Lansoprazole is not the only PPI with health concerns. A recent study linked Omeprazole to migraines in 25% of participants.
If you suspect SCLE due to Lansoprazole, consult your doctor before stopping the medication. Remember, while these medications can be helpful, they also carry risks. Always discuss any concerns with your healthcare provider.
