In the heart of Hanoi's bustling urban landscape, where narrow alleyways weave a complex tapestry of community life, ODDO Architects has crafted a remarkable extension to TH+ House. This project, a testament to the studio's innovative approach, transforms a 2.5-metre-wide plot into a vibrant, social sanctuary. The architects' vision was to create a space that mirrored the lively spirit of Hanoi's alleyways, where daily interactions and shared experiences are the essence of community. This is achieved through a series of stacked, flexible spaces that overlook tall voids, all interconnected by a striking red steel support structure. The design philosophy is a direct response to the unique constraints of the site, treating these limitations as opportunities for social and spatial richness. By organizing the layout around these central voids, the architects have created a visual connection between different floors, fostering a sense of openness and adaptability. The ground floor features a new kitchen, bathroom, and courtyard, seamlessly integrating with the existing dining area. Folding glass doors open onto the adjacent alley, blurring the boundaries between the interior and the urban environment. Above, a living room, tea room, and bedrooms are connected by internal windows and a bean-shaped opening, maintaining visual continuity with the original TH House. Perforated white-steel walkways, supported by exposed concrete floor plates and the central red-painted steel column, provide access to each level. This central column, a structural marvel, not only supports the load but also serves as a spatial organizer, allowing for larger openings and flexible layouts. The design emphasizes openness and adaptability, a bold statement in the tight urban conditions of Hanoi. The lower levels, with dark stone floors and exposed concrete ceilings, contrast with the upper levels lined in timber panels, creating a warm and inviting atmosphere. This extension is a testament to ODDO Architects' ability to transform urban constraints into opportunities for social interaction and spatial innovation. The studio's approach challenges the notion of narrow spaces, proving that they can be both functional and socially vibrant. With a focus on community and adaptability, ODDO Architects has created a space that not only meets the needs of the client's growing family but also enriches the urban fabric of Hanoi. The project's success lies in its ability to capture the essence of Hanoi's alleyways and translate it into a tangible, architectural experience. This extension is a shining example of how architecture can enhance the social fabric of a community, making it a truly remarkable addition to the city's urban landscape.
