In the aftermath of the devastating war in Gaza, which began with Hamas' attack on Israel in October 2023, US President Donald Trump and his team have proposed a glittering future for the region. They envision a vibrant resort city, complete with luxurious skyscrapers and a bustling Mediterranean atmosphere.
"It's going to be a great thing to watch," Trump declared, emphasizing his real estate background and the potential of Gaza's seaside location. His son-in-law, Jared Kushner, took the lead in presenting this 'master plan,' aiming for a 'catastrophic success' that would see Gaza's GDP reach $10 billion within a decade and provide full employment for its residents.
But here's where it gets controversial: Kushner's vision, supported by Israeli real estate developer Yakir Gabay, seems to overlook the complex political and humanitarian challenges facing Gaza. The absence of Egyptian President Abdel Fattah al-Sisi from the presentation is notable, given Egypt's leading role in a 2025 reconstruction plan for Gaza that was widely supported.
"It could be a hope, a destination, a place where people can thrive," Kushner said, promising investments of at least $25 billion. However, critics argue that such a plan, while ambitious, fails to address the root causes of Gaza's problems and the ongoing humanitarian crisis.
And this is the part most people miss: the war has left entire neighborhoods, hospitals, and schools in ruins, forcing hundreds of thousands to live in temporary shelters. The UN has warned of 'inhumane' conditions, even as the US-backed ceasefire continues.
