Zac Lomax Contract Saga: Melbourne Storm's Pursuit of the Star Winger (2026)

A legal battle is brewing in the world of NRL, and it's a saga that has fans and experts alike divided. Melbourne Storm's Frank Ponissi has spoken out about the ongoing Zac Lomax contract dispute, and the potential court case has left many disappointed.

The story begins with Lomax's request to be released from his contract with the Parramatta Eels, aiming to join the R360 competition. However, when the start date for R360 was delayed, Lomax found himself in a tricky situation, searching for a new team.

And here's where it gets controversial: Lomax signed a clause upon his release, stating that he couldn't join another NRL club until 2028 without the Eels receiving compensation. Melbourne Storm stepped in, offering a transfer fee of $300,000, but the Eels rejected this proposal.

The potential swap of Ryan Matterson has also been discussed, as the Eels look to free up salary cap space. But unless a last-minute agreement is reached, these two clubs are headed for a showdown in the Supreme Court to decide Lomax's future.

"It's a disappointing situation for everyone involved," Ponissi shared. "We'd love to have Zac at the Storm, we have the space and the opportunity is there. But we've prepared without him, and if he can't join us, we'll continue to move forward."

Lomax, an elite outside back, has represented both NSW and Australia over the past two seasons, but his early exits from contracts have raised questions about his loyalty within the game.

Despite this ongoing drama, Melbourne Storm is focused on their upcoming trials and round one clash against the Eels on March 5th. Ponissi remains confident in the team's strength, despite the off-season departures of key players like Ryan Papenhuyzen and Nelson Asofa-Solomona.

"We've experienced stability over the last few years, which is rare in modern NRL," Ponissi explained. "We've been through similar changes before and sometimes, a squad needs a refresh. The new players have brought a fresh energy, especially our young talent, and this has kept our coach, Craig Bellamy, motivated to continue until 2028."

This weekend, Melbourne Storm will face the Canberra Raiders in their first pre-season fixture, with a lineup featuring young stars Hugo Peel, Cooper Clarke, and Gabriel Satrick.

So, what do you think? Is Lomax's loyalty being questioned too harshly? And will the Storm's new additions be enough to carry them through the season? Let us know your thoughts in the comments!
